Kenya’s history on technical education would not be complete without the mention of Mawego Technical Training Institute (MTTI), as one of the oldest technical training institute in the country as well as a pioneer institution in Nyanza region situated in the western part of Kenya. The institute located on the pinnacle of a hill in Rachuonyo North Sub-County, Homa Bay County was started in 1952 by the Utretch Brothers of the Netherlands as a Trade School. At the time it offered trades such as Masonry, Leather Work, Tailoring and Carpentry.
In 1967, the institution was taken over by the Government and became a national Technical Secondary School. In 1986, it was upgraded to a Technical Training Institute in the greater South Nyanza comprising Migori and Homa Bay Counties offering technical and business related courses at the level of Certificate and Diploma.
The institute’s student population has over the years stood at 810 with the current teaching staff of 75 lecturers comprising 70 from Teachers Service Commission and 14 employed by institute’s Board of Management. The institute has 37 support and non teaching staff.
